Scotty Hawk was grossly overweight and about sixty years old. He was wearing greasy sweatpants that clung in all the wrong places, he was chain-smoking Marlboros and he had a serious case of BO. Jericho kind of wanted to hug him. Whatever Kayla had been hinting at, it was pretty damn clear that unless Wade had fallen on very hard times, he was not romantically involved with Scotty Hawk.

“Sheriff Morgan said you might have a car I could rent,” Jericho said with a bright smile.

Scotty frowned back at him. “The sheriff said that, did she?” The derision in his voice made the situation clear. Kayla had said Scotty and Wade spent time together—just like Eli and Wade had spent time together. They were all outlaws, criminals, or at least completely uninterested in respecting authority. Wade and Scotty had a professional relationship.

“She did. And she said you might be able to help me get in contact with Wade Granger.”

Dropping that name earned Jericho a slightly less derisive expression. “Wade know you’re looking for him?”

“I doubt it. Probably if he knew, he’d give me a call. I’m not asking for any secrets, but if you could get a message to him for me, that’d be great.”

“You’re Eli Crewe’s boy?” Scotty looked thoughtful and added a grudging, “Sorry for your loss.” He dropped the butt of his cigarette and crushed it under his boot. “You poking into all that? Trying to figure out what happened to him?”

Jericho didn’t want to paint such a clear target on himself. “No. I’m just here for the funeral, I guess. And to help Nikki sort things out.”

Scotty snorted. “Have fun with that.” He gave Jericho another once-over, then said, “Yeah, I’ve got a car you can rent. Fifty bucks a day. You give me your credit card information before you leave the place.”

“Fifty bucks? That’s pretty steep.”

“Take it or leave it.”

Apparently Jericho’s family connections were only going to take him so far. “Fine. I’ll take it. And can you get a message to Wade for me? Or tell me where I might find him?”

“The lady cop didn’t give you that information?”

“Nope.”

Another long look. Jericho was beginning to wish he’d shaved that morning, or at least brushed his teeth. But possibly appearing more respectable wouldn’t have the desired effect on someone like Scotty. “I’ll let him know you’re looking for him,” Scotty finally said. “You can leave your phone number with me.”

Jericho left the information and let himself be led around the back of the garage. Scotty gestured to a baby-blue pickup truck, old enough for the frame to be squared off instead of having the rounded, bulging lines of the modern versions.

“Does it run?” Jericho asked.

Scotty drew back as if insulted. “I’m a mechanic.” He gave the truck a rough thump on the hood and shrugged. “I don’t do body work. But the engine is solid.”

So Jericho climbed in, adjusted the vinyl bench seat as far back as it would go, and cranked the window down to get a little fresh air into the musty cab.
